Bangla Sahib, New Delhi

Bangla Sahib reflected in the Sarowar with the moon in the sky above. Picture by Pavan

Shortly after arriving in Delhi, (and getting something to eat after a 9 hour road journey) we went to Bangla Sahib. This Sikh Gurdwara stands on the site where Guru Hargobind passed away at a really young age (about 9 I think) when Delhi was in the midst of a smallpox epidemic. Whilst treating the ill, he too contracted the disease and consequently died. He was living in a bungla (a house) when he passed away. To commemorate his work for the poor and ill, the owner of the bungla donated the building to the Sikh community. The community has over the last four hundred years (through voluntary donations) has lavishly embellished the original structure. Visiting this place, listening to the hymns and the songs of devotion being played has a moving effect on anyone lucky enough to attend. I have to say that I felt all the weariness of the last few days of activity just melt away whilst listening to the hymns. There is a presence to the place that seems to lift the spirit. We spent quite a while here with the rest of the congregation just soaking in the atmosphere. If you are ever in Delhi, it really is a place worth visiting.
